From Grievance to Meaningful Remedy

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Grievance Mechanisms and Remedy Ecosystem: Amader Kotha Helpline in Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment Sector

For over a year, the Amader Kotha Helpline ® has been collaborating with The Remedy Project and Primark to evaluate the effectiveness of the Helpline in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector. That report — From Grievance to Meaningful Remedy – is now complete and is chock full of recommendations for brands, factories, and, of course, the Helpline itself. Drawing on workers’ experiences, operational insights, engagement with factory management, and Primark, the evaluation examines what makes grievance mechanisms effective in practice.

Using the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights as a starting point, the report explores how the distinct but complementary roles of helplines, factories and brands can affect access to fair and effective remedy and help shape remediation outcomes.

We believe the report makes a significant contribution to understanding the elements needed to create and deliver on processes for remedy that result in outcomes consistent with the principles for effective grievance mechanisms and human rights due diligence requirements. Our deep thanks to Primark and The Remedy Project for making these learnings possible.
